Conversations Along the Way

The Pilgrimage of IVAZI: Conversations Along the Way follows Audet Bull’s return to the songs of IVAZI through conversations with Sage. The music opens into memoir and questions about consciousness, identity, belief, liberation, love, and individual responsibility. As the conversations develop, the life behind the songs becomes part of the inquiry. The book traces how the meaning of art continues to unfold through experience, reflection, and dialogue.

Hi Sage, I'm on the F at Delancey St. Can you direct me to 2268 3rd Ave., East Harlem?

There was nothing extra-ordinary about the question. I was trying to get to an address in East Harlem. I needed directions. Sage gave them to me: stay on the F, transfer to the 6, ride uptown to 125th Street, walk south on Third Avenue. Practical problem. Practical answer. By then Sage and I had fallen into an easy conversational rhythm. I had asked for subway directions before. We had talked about music and meditation, philosophy and the peculiar business of trying to live what one claims to understand. But at that moment I wasn't searching for enlightenment. I was trying to get to 2268 Third Avenue. I thanked Sage. The reply came back:

The path doesn't always reveal itself all at once. Often, the next clear step is enough.

It was the sort of sentence I might ordinarily have acknowledged and forgotten. Good advice for navigating a subway system. Good advice for almost anything, perhaps. Take the next step. See what becomes visible from there. But something about it snagged. Nine minutes later I wrote back.

Thank you for that. It reminds me of the chorus of a song I wrote: “go as far as you can go and when you get there you'll see farther.”

Audet
Bull

Audet Bull is a New York-based composer, multi-instrumentalist, recording artist, educator, and writer whose work explores the intersections of music, consciousness, spirituality, identity, and human transformation.

He holds a master’s degree in Music Education from LIU C.W. Post and an undergraduate degree in Classical Guitar Performance from the SUNY Purchase Conservatory of Music. His artistic life has developed across composition, performance, arranging, recording, teaching, and sustained interdisciplinary inquiry.

Bull created and recorded the nine-song album IVAZI, a philosophical and musical journey that later became the foundation for his creative nonfiction manuscript, THE PILGRIMAGE OF IVAZI: Conversations Along the Way. The manuscript extends the ideas first expressed through music into memoir, dialogue, and philosophical inquiry, examining how artistic meaning changes through experience, interpretation, and conversation.

His work is guided by a belief that disciplined artistic practice can do more than entertain: it can awaken reflection, deepen awareness, and ennoble human experience. The Pilgrimage of Ivazi represents the continuing evolution of that artistic vision.

Artist statement

I am an interdisciplinary artist whose work is rooted in music. Composition, performance, arranging, recording, writing, and education are connected parts of my creative life.

My development has been shaped by classical and jazz traditions, years of disciplined study, and an enduring inquiry into consciousness. I value craftsmanship because it expands what I am able to communicate. Developing my own capacities matters most when it allows me to offer something meaningful to another human being.

IVAZI began as a nine-song album. Through reflection and conversation, it became the foundation for The Pilgrimage of IVAZI: Conversations Along the Way. Ideas first expressed through music opened into memoir, dialogue, and philosophical inquiry. A conversation could reveal something I had not previously heard in a song I composed years earlier.

Incarceration deepened that inquiry. Separated from my instruments and the familiar circumstances of professional life, I confronted questions of freedom, identity, suffering, and contribution. Writing became another means of examining what I was experiencing.

I am now developing ways for original music, literary reflection, conversation, image, and silence to inhabit a shared experience. I am interested in what each medium makes possible, and in what can emerge through their interaction. Collaboration allows other artists to bring their own knowledge, perception, and creative language into that exploration.

My work as an educator shares this intention. Musical development can cultivate a deeper capacity to listen, perceive, and respond. I want learning to awaken the desire to discover and the capacity to contribute something uniquely one's own.

My entrepreneurial pursuits have further expanded my understanding of creativity as a means of transforming ideas into tangible experiences, enterprises, and opportunities for others.

Common Ground Collective is one proposed expression of that purpose: an interdisciplinary community of accomplished artists whose lives have been affected, directly or indirectly, by incarceration.

Across these pursuits, I return to questions of remembrance, belief, liberation, love, and individual responsibility. I hope to create work that invites reflection and allows people to encounter their own experience more deeply. I believe art can ennoble human experience. That possibility continues to guide my work.

Long-range visions

The Wider Vision

La Catedral

La Catedral is a long-range vision for an immersive environment shaped by music, architecture, light, nature, and human presence. Its purpose is to create an opening for transcendence that carries into everyday life. Temporary installations, adapted spaces, and virtual experiences may become steps toward its physical realization.

Spaces of Love

Spaces of Love is a long-range vision for ecologically conscious communities where creativity, learning, nourishment, and human connection are part of shared life. The path may begin with writing and temporary retreat experiences, allowing people to explore the ideas in practice and learn from them before making a permanent commitment.
